EMDHR Statement on Lampedusa Anniversary

We join Eritreans around the world in remembering the 03 October 2013 Lampedusa tragedy with heavy hearts. As we knew it all along and said it then, Lampedusa was not the first and unfortunately it was not going to be the last tragedy befalling the Eritrean people and particularly the fleeing youth. As we mark this dark day we are in the middle of many other tragedies in the Mediterranean sea this year. We have a boat which is missing with about 250 Eritreans who are presumed dead, followed by another boat disaster with many Eritrean victims.

EMDHR News Update

In line with EMDHR's objectives to get as much support and solidarity from international, governmental and non-governmental organizations, in the last couple of months EMDHR managed to meet with different high ranking South African government officials. In the high-level meetings the EMDHR pointed out the current dire political, social and economic situation of Eritrea and stressed that the South African government should play its leading role diplomatically to curb the human tragedy in Eritrea.

Optimism from Frankfurt: My Personal Impressions

Just came back from the Eritrean Festival in Frankfurt in Germany. It was super-yibel awedadiba! For so long now I have been looking for a good enough reason to venture into Germany and there it came- Frankfurt Festival. We had been invited to present the outcome of The Pretoria Declaration which came out of the May 2014 Pretoria Workshop. I didn’t know what to expect.

Tragic News of another boat disaster

The EMDHR is shocked and deeply saddened to learn from contacts in Libya that the boat which has been missing with around 200 Eritreans had collided with another ship/boat and capsized. The boat is believed to have left the Libyan shores at the end of June 2014. According to our informants in Libya only 25 of them survived and are now in unknown prison.

EMDHR Refugee Day Statement

The Eritrean Movement for Democracy and Human Rights (EMDHR) takes the opportunity on this year’s refugee day to highlight the plight of Eritrean refugees and asylum seekers around the world. Eritrea is one of the top refugee producing countries in the world despite the fact that it is one of the smallest countries. Hundreds of thousands of Eritreans are fleeing their country due to the political repression, human rights violations, religious persecution, and forced conscription and forced labour committed by the authoritarian one-man regime.
